Château du Clos Lucé: frequently asked questions

Is this the official Clos Lucé website?

No. Loire Valley Castles is an independent visitor guide. The official website is vinci-closluce.com. The name Clos Lucé belongs to the company that runs it, and we use it only to describe the place. Our tickets are sold by our partner Tiqets.

Is Clos Lucé the same as the Château d’Amboise?

No. They are two different sites about 1 km apart, each with its own ticket. Clos Lucé is Leonardo’s house, and the Château Royal d’Amboise has the chapel where tradition places his tomb.

How much is a ticket?

On the official site, 20 € for an adult, 15 € for children aged 7 to 18, and 60 € for a family of four. It covers the château, the park and the Leonardo galleries.

Is there a combined ticket with Amboise?

Yes, on Tiqets, and the official site links to one. There are also combinations with Chenonceau, and with Amboise and Chambord.

Did Leonardo die at Clos Lucé?

Yes, in his room, on 2 May 1519, according to the official site. Giorgio Vasari wrote that he died in the king’s arms, but court records place Francis I at Saint-Germain-en-Laye that day, so it is a legend.

Can I see the Mona Lisa?

No. Leonardo brought it to France, but it is in the Louvre in Paris.

How long should I allow?

About 2 hours with the park and the galleries, our estimate.

When does the ticket office close?

One hour before the site closes, so the last entry is 17:00 in winter and 19:00 in July and August.

Can I walk from the Château d’Amboise?

They are about 1 km apart. The official page does not give a walking time, and we estimate 10 to 15 minutes.
